Polystyrene Specification

It is produced by the polymerization of the monomer styrene , which is a derivative of petroleum. It is composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms only, hence classified as hydrocarbon in which carbon atoms are linked by covalent bonds and the formula is (C8H8)n.

Expanded Polystyrene Slabs (EPS) has the following quality:

  • Density:  10% as per ASTM C 303 or ASTM D1622
  • Moisture Content : Absolute minimum achievable
  • Compressive Strength : 0.84- 2.46 Kg/cm2 as per ASTM D1621or ASTM C165
  • Tensile Strength : 2.53 - 3.46 Kg/cm2 as per B 54370
  • Flexural Strength: 2.53 - 3.01 Kg/cm2 as per ASTM C203
  • Impact Strength : as notched 1ZOD, 0.36 - 0.45 Kg/cm2
  • Elastic Modulus: 14.06 kg/cm2
  • Shear Stress : 1.41 Kg/cm2
  • Stable Temperature Range: -118oC to 82oC
  • Water Vapor : Permeability at 30oC and 90% relative humidity 60GR/ MSQ per 24 hrs. as per ASTM C355
  • Water Absorption : After seven days immersion 0.4-1.5% by vol. as/ASTM D2842
  • Water Absorption : After 12 month immersion 3- 5% by vol. as per ASTM D2842
  • Thermal Conductivity : By using the transient needle probe method. STD 442:1981 (or K-Factor ) GRCAL/HR/SQ CM/CMoC@ 0oC , @ 10oC , @ 24oC Thermal conductivity of EPS is defined as the quantity of heat in GRCAL which will flow in one hour through one M2 of 1 cm thick EPS when there is 1oC difference of temperature between the two faces of EPS.
  • Ignibility: (As per BS 476:PT5) - Test shows that no specimen under test continued to burn after removal of flame and the burning did not reach the edge of any specimen.
  • Glossy and sparkling appearance.
  • Specific gravity – 1.03 g/cm3 to 1.06 g/cm3.
  • Apparent density – 0.60 g/cm3 to 0.65 g/cm3
  • Tensile Modulus – 3000 to 3600 mPa
  • Tensile Elongation – 1.0 – 5.0 %
  • Shear modulus – 1400 mPa (GPPS)
  • Flexural Modulus – 3200 mPa

  • Optical Properties (High Impact Polystyrene)
  • Refractive Index – 1.58 to 1.59
  • Transmittance – 88 to 90 %
  • Haze – 0.10 to 1.1 %

  • Thermal Properties:
  • Glass transition temperature – 100 degree Celsius.
  • Specific Heat capacity – 1250 J/Kg-K
  • Thermal conductivity – 0.14 W/m-K
  • Thermal Expansion (20 degree to 100 degree celsuis) – 120 micron meter/m-K
  • Vicat softening temperature – 100 degree celsius.

  • Electrical Properties:
  • Di-electric strength – 20 Mv/m
  • Di-electric constant (at 1 MHz) – 2.5
  • Volume Resistivity – ohm-cm > 10^16
  • Arc Resistance – 70 sec

  • Chemical Properties:
  • It is chemically inert and does not reach with most substances.
  • It is soluble in organic solvents that contain acetone.
